The forklift braking system is a critical component in ensuring the safe operation and control of the vehicle.
The forklift braking system consists of:
- The brake pump is directly actuated by the brake pedal and the pressing force is increased with the help of the brake booster.
- Brake cylinders, they are actuated by the brake fluid pushed by the pump with the force applied by the forklift servo brake.
- Brake shoes and drums. The brake shoes of the forklift are located inside the brake drum and are pushed outwards by the brake cylinders, thus creating the frictional force that will stop the forklift.
- The parking brake is a partially separate system from the service brake of the forklift. This locks the wheels in place when the truck is parked, thus preventing the truck from rolling away unintentionally.

Common forklift brake system faults:
- Brake fluid leaks. Leaks in the hydraulic system can lead to a loss of brake fluid, resulting in reduced braking efficiency or complete brake failure. Brake lines, fittings or gaskets may leak.
- Used brake shoes. Over time, brake shoes can wear out due to friction. worn brake shoes reduce braking performance and can eventually lead to metal-to-metal contact, damage to brake rotors or drums.
- Brake cylinders. Brake cylinders can seize due to corrosion, dirt or lack of maintenance. Locked brake cylinders can cause uneven braking or can cause the truck to spin and the shoes and drums to overheat.
- Brake rotor or drum warping: Rotors and drums can warp over time. This can lead to vibration, noise and reduced braking efficiency. The main cause of the deformation is the overheating of the brake drum of the forklift. In this case, the efficiency of the braking system drops significantly.
