The forklift alternator is a crucial component of a forklift's electrical system.

It serves the purpose of generating electricity to recharge the forklift battery and power the vehicle's electrical components while the engine is running.

Overview of forklift alternators:

The primary function of a forklift alternator is to convert mechanical energy from the forklift engine into electrical energy. This electricity is then used to charge the forklift's battery and power various electrical systems such as lights, horns and other accessories.

They are designed to withstand the harsh operating conditions of industrial environments. They are built with durable materials and components to ensure reliability and longevity.

The load capacity of a forklift alternator varies depending on the size and power requirements of the forklift. Alternators have different output ratings, measured in amps, that determine how much electrical power they can generate.

Like any mechanical component, forklift alternators require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity. This includes regular inspections, cleaning and testing to identify potential problems before they become major problems.

If a forklift alternator fails, it will need to be replaced. In most cases, the repair is less expensive than replacing the alternator. Replacement alternators must be compatible with the specific make and model of the forklift and meet the required electrical specifications.

All LPG and Diesel forklifts have an alternator.

The alternator is necessary to ensure the electric current necessary for the operation of the auxiliary equipment mounted on the forklift.

The voltage of the saturable alternator

Alternator voltage differs from case to case. In general, this is between 13.6V to 14.4V.

When should the alternator be changed?

  • When the alternator stops charging, an alert lights up on the side of the forklift. This is not the only case when the forklift alternator needs to be changed.
  • Sometimes the alternator produces a constant noise, like a rattle, in this case, the alternator must be overhauled or replaced.
  • When the forklift battery deteriorates rapidly, the alternator can charge the battery at the wrong voltage, this defect is not signaled on the board, but the battery will have a shorter lifespan.

Quick testing of the alternator

To do a simple charging test, measure the battery voltage before starting the forklift, it should be about 12.6V, then start the forklift and measure the voltage, it should be about 14V.
