Side-loading forklifts are specialized machines designed to handle long or bulky loads safely and stably. They are used in industries where materials cannot be lifted or transported efficiently with a front-loading forklift. The side-loading system allows loads to be moved parallel to the machine, eliminating the need for turning in narrow spaces and reducing the risk of imbalance.
These forklifts are commonly used in sawmills, pipe cutting and distribution centers, metal processing workshops, logistics warehouses with long racks, or industrial yards handling containers or oversized panels. Side-loading forklifts are suitable for transporting long loads in limited spaces or areas with strict safety requirements.
Unlike standard forklifts, side-loading forklifts significantly reduce maneuvering time, allow more efficient use of available space, and minimize wear on components by avoiding sharp turns. The risk of damaging the load during transport is also lower, and operators benefit from better visibility along the path.
A side-loading forklift is equipped with forks mounted on the side of the machine that lift the load perpendicular to the direction of travel. The load is supported on a horizontal platform located inside or extending from the chassis. This design allows for the transport of long materials without shifting the center of gravity forward as in front-loading forklifts.
This provides improved transport stability and reduces the risk of load swaying or tipping. The operator's visibility is not obstructed by the load, and the route does not require wide turns or complex maneuvers.
A concrete example of such equipment is the Combilift CB3000, a side-loading forklift with a 3-ton capacity and 5-meter mast. This model is used in logistics centers where long loads must be moved in restricted traffic areas, both indoors and outdoors.

Side-loading forklifts fall into three main categories based on their power source and steering system: diesel, electric, and multidirectional. Each type has specific applications and operational advantages.
Diesel forklifts are used outdoors on industrial platforms, construction sites, or logistics yards. They have powerful internal combustion engines that offer high load capacity and extended autonomy. They are suitable for heavy loads, difficult terrain, and continuous operation.
Baumann GX60L1245ST is a relevant example, with a 6-ton capacity and 4.5-meter lift height. This model is used in construction and metal logistics sectors for handling heavy and oversized loads.
Electric forklifts are designed for use in warehouses, enclosed areas, or environments where emissions and noise must be controlled. Powered by batteries, they operate quietly, emit no gases, and require less maintenance. They are ideal for high-traffic areas with predefined routes.
BT VRE150 is an example of an electric side-loading forklift, with a 1.5-ton capacity and 7-meter mast. It is used in logistics centers with high racking and narrow aisles, enabling precise load handling at various vertical levels.
Multidirectional forklifts are equipped with wheel systems that allow movement in any direction: forward, backward, and sideways. They are solutions for complex spaces where loads must be transported along irregular routes or in facilities with frequent direction changes.
Votex-Bison Traffic is such a machine, with a 3-ton capacity and 3.3-meter lift height. It is used in industrial plants where adaptability and maneuverability are essential, and long loads must be moved precisely.
Using a side-loading forklift brings clear benefits in production and logistics workflows. These advantages translate into time savings, reduced wear, increased safety, and more efficient space use.
The first advantage is reduced maneuvering time. Side-loading and straight-line travel eliminate the need for turning and route adjustments. In busy warehouses or production lines, this can significantly shorten operation times.
The second advantage is improved safety. Side forks keep the load stable throughout transport. There is no risk of front tipping, and the operator’s visibility is better than with front-loading forklifts.
The third benefit is space optimization. Side-loading forklifts can operate in narrower aisles, allowing racks to be placed closer together and increasing storage density without expanding the facility.
Another advantage is flexibility. In the same facility, beams, boards, tubes, or panels can be handled with one machine, without needing to adjust the layout.
Properly serviced second-hand side loaders can also offer economic benefits. Their acquisition cost is lower than that of new machines, and with proper maintenance, they provide comparable performance and reliability.
Selecting the right side-loading forklift requires an objective analysis of several factors: load characteristics, available space, usage intensity, and operating conditions.
The first criterion is load type: length and weight. For long and heavy materials, a diesel model with high capacity is required. For lighter loads in indoor areas, a compact electric model is sufficient.
The second criterion is lift height. If goods must be stored on high shelves, an extendable mast is needed. For low-level transport, a shorter mast may be adequate.
The third criterion is facility layout. In fixed-aisle setups with closely spaced racks, a narrow-profile machine with a small turning radius is essential. Multidirectional models can eliminate the need for turning entirely and work efficiently in irregular spaces.
Other relevant factors include daily operating hours and immediate availability. For occasional use, a basic model may suffice. For continuous shifts, a heavy-duty machine with a predictable maintenance schedule is recommended.
