A forklift battery charger is one of the most important accessories for any electric forklift, electric pallet jack, or reach truck. Without a high-quality rectifier, correctly matched to the voltage and capacity of the traction battery, the performance and lifespan of the battery decrease significantly, generating additional costs and unplanned downtime in warehousing and logistics activities.
At UTEC, we understand the needs of warehouse operators, fleet managers, and logistics procurement officers. That is why we offer our customers a selected range of professional forklift battery chargers, compatible with equipment from the most well-known brands on the Romanian and European markets.

A forklift battery charger – often called a forklift battery rectifier or charging station – is an industrial electrical device that converts alternating current (AC) from the power grid (230V single-phase or 400V three-phase) into direct current (DC) at the correct voltage and amperage to recharge the vehicle's traction battery.
Unlike a simple car charger, industrial forklift rectifiers are designed to handle battery capacities in the hundreds of Ah (usually between 150 Ah and over 1000 Ah) and intense daily discharge-recharge cycles. In an active warehouse, an electric forklift is put on charge at the end of every shift, so the charger must be robust, energy-efficient, and safe under all conditions.
Choosing the wrong charger – whether due to incorrect voltage, inadequate amperage, or lack of an automatic shut-off function – can irreparably damage battery cells, reduce forklift autonomy, and generate replacement costs of thousands of euros.
The UTEC portfolio includes several types of forklift battery chargers, each adapted to a specific type of machine and usage mode:
Electric pallet jacks (often called electric walkies) are equipped with 24V batteries with capacities ranging from 80 Ah to 300 Ah. The battery charger for an electric pallet jack must deliver a charging current of 10-20% of the battery's nominal capacity. A 24V / 30A rectifier is sufficient for small models, while extended-autonomy pallet jacks require 24V / 50-80A chargers.
These chargers are compact, easy to wall-mount or place on a mobile cart, and connect to a standard 230V single-phase socket. They are also suitable for electric tow tractors, industrial cleaning machines, and mobility scooters.
Standard capacity electric forklifts (1.5 – 3.5 tons) are equipped with 24V, 36V, or – most frequently – 48V batteries. The 48V battery is the standard voltage for the vast majority of electric forklift models sold in Europe: Linde E-Series, Still RX20/RX60, Toyota 8FBE/8FBET, Jungheinrich EFG, and others.
A 48V battery charger with a charging current of 80-120A ensures a full recharge of a 500 Ah battery in approximately 6-8 hours – perfect for overnight charging between shifts. High-Frequency (HF) chargers reduce this time and consume up to 30% less energy than conventional rectifiers.
Reach trucks (forklifts with retractable forks, used at heights of 6-15m) and forklifts with high triplex masts require higher capacity batteries, usually at 48V or 72V. Larger models or those used in 2-3 shift operations may require 80V chargers.
For these applications, we recommend chargers with an intelligent IUoU charging profile (constant current – constant voltage – finishing phase), which ensures cell equalization and significantly extends battery life.
Electric aerial platforms (scissor lifts, articulated booms, mast climbers) are equipped with 24V or 48V batteries, with capacities of 100-400 Ah. Chargers for platforms must withstand varied environmental conditions (construction sites, industrial halls) and are often available in versions with IP44 or IP65 protection ratings.
A complete charging cycle for a traction battery includes several phases that a professional charger manages automatically:
High-Frequency (HF) rectifiers use IGBT or MOSFET transistors for high-frequency switching (tens of kHz), allowing for energy efficiency of over 92% and a much more compact size compared to conventional low-frequency transformer rectifiers.
The first step in choosing a forklift battery charger is checking the battery's nominal voltage. This is listed on the machine's identification plate or directly on the traction battery casing. Connecting a charger of the wrong voltage can irreversibly damage the battery or, in extreme cases, cause short circuits.
| Battery Voltage | Typical Equipment | Recommended Charging Current |
|---|---|---|
| 24V | Electric pallet jacks, tow tractors, cleaning machines, small AWPs | 20 – 80A |
| 36V | Small forklifts, some compact reach truck models | 40 – 80A |
| 48V | Standard electric forklifts (Linde, Still, Toyota, Jungheinrich), reach trucks | 60 – 120A |
| 72V | Medium reach trucks, order pickers, telehandlers | 80 – 120A |
| 80V | Heavy electric forklifts, high triplex masts, 2-3 shift applications | 100 – 150A |
The optimal charging current is 10-20% of the nominal battery capacity (Ah). Example: 500 Ah battery → recommended current 50-100A.
UTEC chargers are compatible with the main traction battery technologies used in modern electric forklifts:
The most common type of forklift traction battery on the market. Liquid electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid), open cells with ventilation plugs. Requires periodic distilled water top-ups and a well-ventilated charging area (hydrogen is released). Lifespan: 1000-1500 cycles if properly maintained.
Electrolyte absorbed in fiberglass separators. Maintenance-free, no water top-ups. Suitable for spaces with limited ventilation. Requires a specific charging profile – lower absorption voltage than WET. Configurable chargers or those with a WET/AGM selector are recommended.
The electrolyte is gelled, with no risk of leakage. Highly resistant to deep discharge cycles and vibrations. Sensitive to overvoltage – requires chargers with a dedicated GEL profile. Do not use a standard WET rectifier on a GEL battery without the proper setting.
Modern technology increasingly adopted in new forklifts. Major advantages: 60-70% weight reduction, fast charging in 1-2 hours, zero maintenance, possibility of opportunity charging without affecting lifespan. Important: Li-Ion batteries require dedicated chargers with a BMS (Battery Management System) protocol – they are not compatible with classic lead-acid rectifiers. Contact the UTEC team for Li-Ion charging solutions.
Even the most high-performance forklift battery charger cannot compensate for incorrect battery usage. Follow these basic rules to maximize your traction battery's cycle count:
A well-organized forklift battery charging station is mandatory for any warehouse or production unit with more than 2-3 electric machines. European legislation (EN 50272-3) and fire safety regulations impose specific conditions for lead-acid battery charging areas:
AGM, GEL, and Li-Ion batteries are sealed and do not release flammable gases under normal conditions, eliminating special ventilation requirements and allowing charging in less demanding spaces.
